Spears Declare Independence
by Epoch, Staff Writer
Palanthas - The Spears of Palanthas have broken ties with Emperor Markham, declaring themselves an independent fighting force answerable only to the city government of Palanthas.
"By now, most of you have received word of the forceful removal of the Senate from office." Colonel Donovan L'Inshere read from a prepared statement. "A short time afterward, General Alison Skyler, commander-in-chief of the Spears, requested an audience with the Emperor to discuss the situation and attempt to arrange for a possible release of the senators and for restoration of order to the Palanthian government."
"Emperor Markham then, with no warrant or justification, accused General Skyler and the entire general staff of the Spears, of treason and insurrection. He declared that all those who supported the Senate defied the Empire. Emperor Markham then ordered the immediate arrest of General Skyler and all flag officers of the Spears."
"General Skyler spoke of our oath of service in her plea to Emperor Markham. In it, we pledge first to serve the people of Palanthas. Emperor Markham has threatened our safety with the attempted resolution to use mind-reading magic on our citizens, the dissolution of the Senate, and now the imprisonment of our leaders. When the actions of the Emperor and the safety of the people of this city come into conflict, a choice must be made. It falls to me, as acting commander of the Spears, to make that choice. In my mind, there is only one choice to make: effective immediately, the Spears of Palanthas will act as an independent fighting force, answerable only to the lawful government of Palanthas, not the Emperor nor the Knights of Solamnia. We will remain as such until the Emperor restores the Senate, or is removed from the throne."
After reading the statement, this reporter asked Colonel L'Inshere what he thought Emperor Markham's response might be. "I tend to think that, by declaring our leaders to be traitors, the Emperor has declared all of the Spears traitors, and we'll be dealt with accordingly." When asked what he recommends Palanthian citizens do in this situation, the Colonel said, "I anticipate the Emperor will respond to this declaration with force, and he may do so at any time. I recommend all citizens remain in their homes until this crisis is over."
