Whitestone Council Held; Old Divisions Remain
by Kendermage, Staff Writer
Palanthas – Emperor Markham's first Whitestone Council was held this week in Palanthas.
Security for the event was tight with the famed Spears providing protection for all delegations.
"With the Spears on duty no unauthorized visitors will gain entry to the Council chambers," said Colonel Donovan L'Inshere of the Palanthas Spears. "That said, I'm surprised Emperor Markham didn't just hire a bunch of dirty mercs to provide security."
L'Inshere's remark is an obvious a jab at Emperor Markham's decision to demote L'Inshere due to his comments about Emperor Markham's decision to contract out rebuilding of the High Clerist's Tower to the dwarves of Compound.
First to arrive at the Palace was the Hill Dwarf delegation headed by Thane Winston Firechisel. Followed closely by their mountain dwarf cousins from Kayolin. The mountain dwarves of Thorbardin and Thoradin declined to send representatives, as did the hill dwarves of Hillhome.
Only one delegation of elves attended the Council, a delegation from Cristyne led by Regent Belthanos of Baleph. Speaker of the Sun and Stars Gilthas Pathfinder, of Inath-Wakenti declined Emperor Markham's invitation citing timing as a major factor.
The Minotaur Empire had intended to attend until their Ambassador was expelled from Palanthas. The expulsion has caused some bad blood between the two Empires.
"This is a grave affront to the Minotaur Empire and will not go unanswered," said former Ambassador Santhia de Droka several weeks ago before boarding a ship bound for Nethosak; the very same ship from which she would later be abducted. As a result no dispatch was ever received regarding their attendance, but the minotaurs absence spoke volumes.
Several items were on the table for this meeting, none of which were resolved to the satisfaction of Emperor Markham.
"Lousy Bureaucrats, the whole lot of them," Emperor Markham told the Herald. "They can't even agree to come to one another's aide when it is needed and none of them wanted to give up their individual currencies for more stable coinage. It'll serve them right if their lands are invaded and their economies crumble."
Of those in attendance, only the Solamnic's longtime allies Kayolin and Mt. Nevermind agreed to both non-aggression pacts and to consider the merits of standardizing coinage. The elves of Baleph did agree to non-aggression pacts on the condition that they are left in peace.
The kender representative, Lynus Windseed of Hylo asked for the Solamnic Empire to intercede with Belladonna on behalf of the kender people to convince her to step down. Emperor Markham assured Windseed he would take the matter under advisement.
