High Clerist Saved from Assassin's Blade

Palanthas – On Bracha High Clerist Gabriel Jhent narrowly avoided death at the hands of a Nerakan assassin.

High Clerist Jhent was on hand for the monthly Knights Council held at the High Clerists Tower. It was business as usual, with Jhent hearing news affecting the Knighthood as a whole, then old business and new business, followed by petitions for knighthood.

According to witnesses in attendance at the Knight's Council, about halfway through the petitions Jhent was set upon by a petitioner responding to the name of Grall Stonesword. When Grall's name was read along with that of his sponsor, Sir Harald Karanus, Karanus responded by saying the petitioner was not one of his. Karanus told the Herald, "I did not know the boy who claimed to be Grall and honor demanded I could not claim so. The High Clerist barely managed to throw himself backward as the assassin pulled a concealed blade. Some of the petitioners nearby and a couple of low ranking knights leapt to the aid of the High Clerist and were able to prevent the assassin doing him harm, though several of them were wounded in the attempt, one severely."

Karanus reported that Sir Varin Crownguard, entered the fray and cut down the assassin before he could complete his foul task. Crownguard offered these words, "Weapons are traditionally barred from the council chambers except during times of war, especially in the hands of those who have not yet won their spurs. In my duties as Bailiff, I am allowed to wear a sword; which is fortunate for the High Clerist."

The wounded were tended by clerics of Kiri-Jolith and all were found to have sustained minor wounds, though five were found to have been poisoned by the assassin. The five including a severely injured petitioner were treated for their wounds and poisoning, and kept overnight for observation.

Among the possessions of the assassin was found a vial of poison later identified as Green Dragon Bile and what nearly killed the boy, as well as a lead medallion bearing the symbols of the Dark Knights. An investigation is underway into how the assassin was able to smuggle in weapons to the Council Chamber.

As a reward for their meritorious service, the High Clerist added his name as a co-sponsor to the petitions of the petitioners that risked their lives to save his. The two knights who assisted will receive commendations when they are released from the infirmary.
