Secret Level Discovered Underneath City Jail
by Heine Stick, Staff Writer
Palanthas - The Palanthas City Jail has been sealed off and its prisoners evacuated to the High Clerist Tower after a secret level was discovered underneath the main building. According to city officials, the jail will be sealed off indefinitely.
"During standard maintenance some of our guards discovered a large trapdoor in the floor in our cellar," said Wertyl Toom, warden of the jail. "Jail personnel had complained about some strange smell coming from the room and I sent a couple of guards to check it out."
According to Toom, the guards reported that there is a whole level underneath the cellar. The rooms they did investigate before they left the level were described as 'summoning chambers.
"The guards told me that the rooms were covered with diagrams and runic circles. Furthermore, some slimy green-purple substance covered the floor inside many of these circles. I'm not going to send in any more of my guards and I'm hoping that the authorities will send someone in who's qualified to deal with things like this.
"I'm quite sure that we can all be glad the Dark Knights were defeated when they were," said Annina Sreym, scholar and expert on Dark Knight religion. "The way these chambers have been described to me, I have no doubt that they were summoning chambers. It's well-known that in the last days of the Dark Knight occupation, the knights were desperate to bolster their ranks somehow and if the Knights of Solamnia had chosen a later date to liberate the city, there might not have been all that much city to liberate."
"However, I doubt that summoning extraplanar beings was the original purpose for the jail's extra level. Documents written by Sir Vickar Grimgeitz, who was the city's magistrate during the Dark Knight occupation, were uncovered after the liberation, and in those documents we found several references to expansions of the jail to accommodate socalled 'extreme criminals'."
Several senators have come forth with concerns regarding this extra level and it's believed that the Senate itself considers this a high-priority issue. A special Senate meeting is scheduled for tomorrow.
