Chancellor of University Refuses to Remove Students

Palanthas – Chancellor Trepallas of the University of Palanthas has rebuffed statements that he should resign his post after he refused to expel several students from the university. Allegations against the students claim that their admittance was dependent upon a large grant offered to the school by a group committing various attacks against the city of Palanthas. At the time the donation was made, the knowledge of the grant's source was unknown to the public and the school.

These students originated from Jelek and Neraka prior to coming to Palanthas, and they have been very outspoken against many in the Senate, the Knights of Solamnia, and the Lord Regent himself. Up to this point their words have merely been an expression of their own views. However many question the idea of having students here when their tuitions were paid by those who desire to destroy the city.

Chancellor Trepella responded, "The fact is we've already incorporated the money into our budgets, and the students themselves have broken no laws or school rules. It would be irresponsible of me to throw them out without a solid basis regardless of what public sentiment is."

Prior to this semester, the Senate elected to cut the university's funding to cover costs of increased security. When patrols and details in the city were relaxed with the dismissal of the Golden Shield, much of the budget allocated to security was not returned to the initial programs.

Senator Mauryan told the Herald, "It's not like we give out money day-by-day. The Golden Shield was paid for. That budget item was balanced. Construction continues at the Clerist Tower despite cost increases for some unforeseen repairs. Plus we've had many other concerns crop up at the docks. There is still the Shoikan plant recollection. The upcoming Mages' Fair. No doubt when the next quarter's taxes are collected the Senate will revisit the university's support. Until then, Trepallas needs to recognize that some of his students are fringe conspirators to several attacks on this city, some of which have resulted in death."

Kamar Rangcol, a half-ogre and one of the students in question, gave a brief reply when encountered on the way to class. "Just another example of how this city hates those different from them. This was my only chance to get an education, and I took the opportunity. I don't care where the money came from. People here are just looking for an excuse to get rid of us. They're all hypocrites. They're only against us now because the corrupt Solamnics are in charge. Nobody complained when this city had real leadership. Then, as soon as they are taken over by the cowards who sent in a mage to put all of the guards to sleep, the people switched sides. Traitors. The Solamnics have never won a fair face-to-face battle with the Nerakan forces. Never will either. They always need some hand of god appearing at the last minute to save them."
