Creature Guards Menacing Statues

Palanthas – After several months of secretly destroying statues of the Dark Queen that have been randomly appearing in the hillsides around Palanthas, a majority of the patrol has been slain by a large creature guarding them. Of the two survivors out of a party of eight who have been conducting these removals, only one has regained consciousness at the Halls of Healing.

M'lal Keeper (18), who was secretly hired by the city along with others, contacted the Herald to relay events to the public. "Nothing was different about this statue. Nothing. Then, just before there was enough daylight to allow us to destroy it, we felt fear sweep over us. I never felt dragonfear before, and Havry said that's what it was. Candlyn disagreed, but before he could say anything, a massive treant burst out of the forest and crushed Havry with an arm. The sorceress Solya, she was too afraid to move when it turned on her. We all couldn't move. It leaned over and... bit her in half with a large toothed mouth. Then it looked at all with shining eyes and said, 'You will not touch the Remembered One. You will all die.'"

According to Keeper, the treant was an oak, but black and twisted in shape. Apparently the dark color did not correspond to burns but to the effects of some sort of dark magic.

"Only after we saw part of Solya hanging from its mouth did some of us snap out of it. Korfend went at it with two torches, but it breathed cold air and snuffed out the flames. It... It smelled like death. I tried casting, but the magic broke apart as soon as it hit the monster. I remember being struck on my right side. For a few minutes, I was too scared to move. I was just lying there as I heard the screaming... everyone dying. Finally I saw Candlyn in front of me. I slowly started to pull him down the hill back towards the city. We were almost to the gates when he woke up. He said, 'It was the fear of the grove. It was Shoikan.' Then he passed out."

"The next thing I remember is waking up in the temple. Some Senator's man was telling me it was in my best interest to stay quiet. I know Korfend said we were doing a Senator's work, but I don't know who. Then the man told me they would protect me so long as I kept quiet. I agreed, but when I was better I thought it might be safer to tell what I knew instead. I got the feeling I wasn't going to stay safe by just being quiet."

After the interview, Keeper said he was leaving Palanthas. He was certain not to tell anyone which way where he was going. The City Guard stated investigations are being made but had no further comment.
