City Creates Golden Shield Unit

Palanthas - On yesterday's meeting the City Senate created a new militia unit called the Golden Shield. This unit's primary function would be for the protection and safety of the city in times of crisis. The need for the new unit was pointed out at the last Senate meeting in which several members of the Senate questioned the city's readiness in case of an attack.

"After we toured the defense of the city this week we were concerned about the lack of safety for citizens," stated Senator Tolbin Mauryan. "Many of us were unimpressed by the amount of work put into making sure our citizens are safe. It seems that the City Watch has put the emphasis on defense of the city's walls rather then moving citizens to safety in times of crisis."

Mauryan went on to explain that the Golden Shield would consist of 500 able bodied citizens trained in the use of weapons and also in urban warfare. The main purpose of the unit would be to assist in the moving of citizens from areas of danger to safe zones. Another duty the Golden Shield would provide is securing or holding onto areas of danger until they could be relieved.

The Golden Shield name is a slight twist of the old Dwarven counterpart from Thorbardin. That unit was called the Golden Hammer and primarily crushed foes before they could reach Thorbardin. The Golden Shield will take on the same idea but in a different light. Rather than crushing foes they will protect citizens and prevent harm from coming to the citizens under their protection.

"This is a great chance for our young people in the city to give something back," said Mauryan. "The city needs more defenders then we have right now. We need to take more steps in securing the safety of the citizens in case of war, natural disaster or a riot."

Anyone interested in joining the Golden Shield are encouraged to the City Watch to sign up. Some experience in weapons is preferred but not necessary as the Golden Shield will provide its own training program. The Golden Shield will meet once a month for training and will train for a three weeks in the winter. Also recruits will have to undergo the same training as a City Watchmen.
