Arena In Palanthas?

Palanthas - The Palanthas Herald has come into possession of certain documents which prove that a man of Nerakese origin has been buying several buildings in New City, all of which have been left empty since the liberation of the city. Furthermore the Herald has learned that this Nerakan plans to build an arena in Palanthas in which to hold gladiatorial events. It is very unlikely that the City Senate and the Knights of Solamnia will support such a construction, but sources from within the Senate claim that the Nerakan is backed by a very influential faction.

When asked about the possibility of a gladiatorial arena in Palanthas, the common man seemed rather pleased by the prospect. "About time I say!" a teamster said when confronted with the news. "This is good news indeed! The most exciting thing to happen lately was winning our freedom. Kinda sad though ain't it? I'd like to see some of those Dark Knight prisoners of war they have stowed away in some keep somewhere fight in the arena. Much can be said about the bastards but they were excellent fighters!" Many others who were asked echoed the teamster's opinion while others still wasn't too fond of the idea.

Rewin Thunderleaf, a Palanthian merchant who has travelled extensively in the Blood Sea region had this to say. "Personally, I think the Senate is making a mistake by condemning any attempt at building an arena in Palanthas as they're bound to, judging by previous debates on the subject. Instead they should build a public arena run and controlled by the city and not some private faction. This would generate more income to the city and provide a very effective way of making the populace content. It works in the Minotaur Isles and I don't see why it wouldn't work here."

While the City Senate has been unavailable for comments, it seems very unlikely that it would condone the erection of an arena in Palanthas. There has always been a fierce opposition to similar proposals in the past, the Lord Mayor and the Senate having claimed that gladiatorial events are nothing but a macabre display of death and destruction and a very barbaric institution. In the past the Governing bodies of the city have been backed by the Knights of Solamnia who find the events to be both barbaric and dishonourable.

Master of Swords Sir Balidorf supported this assumption. "As long as Knights of Solamnia maintain a garrison in the city, there will be no arena in Palanthas. The mere notion is ridiculous. An arena serves no purpose other than making a statement to the citizens that violence is alright and might makes right and it shows our young ones that morality is relative and can be disregarded if the circumstances are right."
