Northgate (Thorbardin)

Article written by Gerrin

Northgate was the name given to the screw and plug mechanism that sealed the northern entrance into Thorbardin. The gate was an iron-framed opening in the granite that was reinforced with unseen iron bards drilled into the stone to prevent the shattering. The frame was solid iron and 14 feet wide by two feet thick. The screw and plug mechanism was a waterwheel drive that moved the gate. The gate took nine years to complete and the screw that opens the door contained a year's supply of iron and nickel. This gate was located inside of the Northgate Complex.
