"Fear, it is the most delicious of emotions. Whether living or dead it all taste so splendidly."

The destruction of Kendermore awakened a gripping sense of fear in the kender who witnessed it, a fear which carved itself deep into their psyche. Afflicted was the name given to these kender who found themselves shaken to their core. Many of them became consumed by paranoia or madness the world around them suddenly revealed to be a cold and terrible place. But this awakening touched the kender even further than any could realize or imagine. The terror that rested in their very souls could twist them even after death, spawning a terrible undead known as the Forlorn. But those were just the tip as amidst the Forlorn an even greater form appeared, one that literally revels in the fear that consumed them before, the Fearbringer.

Description:

Shadewalker keeps much of his face hidden beneath an elaborate skull mask which covers the top portion of his face. The revealed lower portion is painted white to accent the mouth which has been drawn back taunt in a hideous grin. The holes in the mask reveal the burning hungry crimson flame of his undeath. He normally keeps the rest of his body hidden beneath the folds of his cloak and rarely fully reveals himself, preferring to keep to the shadow so the tantalizing fear of the unknown plays in the mind of his enemies.

Shadewalker is obsessed with fear. He finds the presence completely intoxicating and regardless of his actions the desire to incite more of it colors every decision. The true kender's immunity to fear enrages him as he gladly sends his minions to tear them apart just to hear them scream. Those who profess valor or courage are incredibly tempting to him too as he longs to bring them quaking in their knees in horror. When in gleeful happiness in the presence of terrified others, Shadewalker has a tendency to chew on his claws in glee.

Background:

Shadewalker abandoned his former kender name after he left with others from the burning cinder remains of Kendermore. He was still a child at the time, but the images burned their way into his minds and shook his core. In Hylos, the afflicted remained haunted by the death and devastation. What he had witnessed opened his eyes to the spirit world around him. He became known amongst kender as a Nightstalker, but it did little to grant peace to his shattered psyche.

The presence of the true kender in Hylos soon became unbearable for Shadewalker who left the land behind to travel. He did not do it under a presumption of wanderlust, but in part seemingly coaxed by the spirits around him. Shadewalker found himself drawn to old ruins where the dead still linger. The powers of a Nightstalker helped protect him from the worse predators in the area and the suffused despair and horror that tainted the places almost felt soothing. Inevitably, he would find himself wandering off again to find another place of even greater despair and loathing.

This continued for many years as he wandered from one desolate site to the next. Each time, he seemed drawn to places of greater magnitudes of horror, almost becoming addicted to feelings that these places emanate. Eventually he found himself in the most unlikely of destinations, Kenderhome, in the land of the Desolation. Fear gripped him as he looked upon the ruins as memories flooded back to him. And yet, while one part of it revolted and frightened him, a deep lingering desire for it also stirred within him.

So transfixed by the site was he, that he hardly paid any mind to the forlorn kender that emerged from the ruins at the sight of a new prey. Their cackling didn't bother him the least as he seemed to bask in the chilling presence as they shrieked and pounced upon him. He didn't resist at all as they killed him as he instead found an exciting flush of fear deep inside explode out. When they were done, he rose up once more, now as a Fearbringer. The Forlorn now bowed to his command as he found a hunger and a desire to visit this intoxicating fear upon others.

Shadewalker took his forlorn army from Kendermore and instead relocated them in the Port of Balifor and settled them in Gloom Town. The presence of some many afflicted kender ready to be shown the beauty of fear and added to the ranks was far too enticing. He now wages a shadow war amidst the ruined buildings against Kronn Thistleknott. For now, Shadewalker keeps his forlorn concentrated in Gloom Town till they can swell the ranks with the locals. Then he plans on unleashing them against the rest of Port Balifor. With an army of forlorn, fearbringers, and wights at his disposal, he plans to push his campaign of fear across the eastern lands of Ansalon.

In Your Campaign:

Shadewalker's presence in Gloom Town can provide the stepping stone for an ongoing campaign in Port Balifor. The afflicted kender may grudgingly look for help for their trouble. Or the dangerous shadow war being fought may occasionally spill out onto the streets of Port Balifor. Also, the presence of certain individuals amongst the party may entice Shadewalker to act against them, especially the sight of any knight or true kender would fuel his desire to see them quake in fear.

Surrounded by his web of fear, Shadewalker will never directly challenge the PCs until they are strong enough to face him. He can make his presence known simply watching from the sideline, utilizing his stealth skill to watch in fascination at their futile struggles. Also, his spirit companions can be used prior to PCs' encounter with their master. Should the PCs show themselves to be a threat; he will sequester himself deep in his lair in Gloom Town. A twisted maze of corridors and traps filled with his undead minions to test their mettle if they should try and seek him out.

Spirit Companions:

Grimborne Johnannson (CE male ghost (human) Sorcerer 8) - A cruel bully in life who used his sorcerery to terrorize others before being slain by Dark Knights.

Koralinda Half-Elven (CN female ghost (half-elf) Bard 8) - A tragic soul flushed with artistic spirit who voice only sings dirges and lures others to their doom.
