Mirrorseer

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Epoch

"Will you look into the mirror?"
"What will I see?"
"Even the wisest cannot tell, for the mirror shows many things. Things that were, things that are, and some things that have not yet come to pass."

-Galadriel and Frodo, The Fellowship of the Ring

The Mirrorseers use the power of water to augment their divinations and other magicks. Water, they say, is the source of life. It reflects things as they are. If one looks long enough, one can see the past, and as the light bends, sometimes the water reflects the future.

The order was founded by nomadic druids of Habbakuk and Chislev about 100 years prior to the War of the Lance. They eventually settled in the mountains due east of Jelek, and there to stay on a permanent basis circa 300 AC due to the rising numbers of dragonarmy forces and monsters in the area. Eventually they expanded their membership to include clerics and wizards who braved the perilous region to learn their ways, although they steadfastly refused Black Robes or followers of the gods of darkness.

In the Age of Mortals, mystics and sorcerers have also been accepted into the Mirrorseers. This causes some tension with wizards and certain clerics, however all Mirrorseers see themselves as brothers and sisters in the divination arts. In this regard, the Mirrorseers are akin to the Legion of Steel in accepting both focused and ambient magic users and showing they can work together for common causes.

Mirrorseers offer their divinatory and water magic powers to any goodly folk in need, regardless of personal philosophy or lack thereof. After joining the order, many leave and wander the lands of Ansalon to offers their services. Some stay in the Taman Busuk and aid the common folk of the region the aid they often need against the difficulties they face.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Mirrorseers gain no additional proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Spellcasting: When a character gains a level of mirrorseer, he gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in the spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class (if any). He does not, however, receive any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (bonus feats, class abilities, and so on). This essentially means that he adds the new mirrorseer level to the level of his previous spellcasting class, then determines spell slots and spells readied accordingly. A character who had more than one spellcasting class before becoming an mirrorseer must decide which class receives the mirrorseer level.

See the Past and Present: A mirrorseer can gain insight into the past or the present of a subject by looking into a pool of water. By performing a ritual that takes one minute to complete, the mirrorseer can ask one yes/no question pertaining to the subject's past or present actions (i.e. actions that the subject wants insight to that will occur no more than 1 day in the future per mirrorseer level).

Water Substitution: This ability operates differently for D&D spellcasters than for Arcana Evolved spellcasters. The mirrorseer can cast any spell with an energy descriptor (for D&D magic users) with the cold descriptor instead of the spell's normal descriptor once per day. Arcana Evolved spellcasters may use the water elemental descriptor instead of the spell's normal elemental descriptor in the same manner. The mirrorseer can use this ability once per day at 2nd level and 3 times per day at 4th. At 4th level, an Arcana Evolved spellcaster can use the water descriptor in lieu of any element or energy descriptor.

See the Future: At 3rd level, the mirrorseer can gain insight into events one week into the future per mirrorseer level.

Fluid Magic: At 4th level, when a mirrorseer casts a spell with the water (AE) or cold (D&D) descriptor can make a caster power check (1d20+caster level+casting ability modifier) instead of a caster level check to beat a creature's spell resistance.

Greater Seeing: At 5th level a mirrorseer can see actual visions of events that have happened (or will happen) to a subject for up to a total of five rounds. The nature of the events seen is up to the DM, who may say when the events take place or not as he sees fit. The mirrorseer can also ask more elaborate questions, that can require an answer of up to one word per caster level, or up to one yes/no question per caster level.
