Bast is the roguish Beast Lord of Cats. He is most famed for his scimitar, which is a powerful artefact and for his actions in the Abanasinian city of Mereklar with the twins Raistlin and Caramon Majere and the kender Earwig Lockpicker.

The Lord of Cats had set his domain to guard the city since the gods of Neutrality were duped by Takhisis into building it. Takhisis thought to use the city as a gate, allowing her access again to Krynn. To this end, Takhisis sent nine demons to possess the Lords and Ladies of Mereklar and a loyal lich, Shavas.

There the nine demons and the lady-lich stayed, waiting for the time when they could open the gate for there mistress. Before that however, they needed to rid themselves of the feline guardians and watchers that Bast had set in the city, so they began to kill off the cats.

The cityfolk demanded action from the Lords of Mereklar, so Shavas and the demons had to play along with the acts of getting adventurers to come to Mereklar and solve the riddle of the missing cats. Bast discovered the disappearing cats and also came to Mereklar to discover the reason. He saw the demon possessed Lords and realised what they were and attacked them, hoping to get the cityfolk spurred into action.

The Beast Lord steered Raistlin Majere into discovering the truth about Mererklar and Shavas, and together with his twin, Caramon and the kender, Earwig, they stopped the Dark Queen from re-entering Krynn during the Night of the Eye.

The Beast Lords, Lycanthropy and Krynn

Krynn has no true lycanthropes, either afflicted or natural, but all Beast Lords are forms of lycanthropes and gain the lycanthropy template (altered as noted below), this is in addition to the aspect template on page 80 of Holy Orders of the Stars, they normally gain.

The Beast Lords have the ability to cause a creature affected by their supernatural ability to become a lycanthropic creature and serve their needs as-and-when they are needed. Such Krynnish lycanthropes gain the template as described on page 175 of the Monster Manual, with the exception to information presented below, which supersedes that information.

The lycanthropic ability can be gained by any humanoid or giant as well as any animal that falls into the Beast Lords domain (such as cats for Bast). Effected creatures do not have direct access to the benefits of the lycanthropic template. The Beast Lord that affected them can, at their option, choose to activate the template any time between initial effect and a number of days equal to the Beast Lord's Hit Dice. After that time, the character effectively loses the templates effects (or the ability to gain the templates effects).

For the purposes of the lycanthropic template, the animal is treated as being a human of a size within one step of the animal's original size. The 'humanoid' animal has the following ability scores before adjusting for the template: Str 13, Dex 11, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 8.

Once the Beast Lord has activated the effect within a creature, the creature gains full access to the lycanthropic template until a number of days equal to the Beast Lord's Hit Dice has expired, at which point the creature loses the templates effects. The Beast Lord can activate the lycanthropic effect within a creature he has affected by simply commanding the creature to transform (a free action). The creature makes the normal Fortitude save against the effect at this point (DC 10 + 1/2 the Beast Lord's Hit Dice + the Beast Lord's Constitution modifier). A creature that succeeds the save does not transform and gains no benefit from the template. The saving throw is Constitution based.

A creature that fails the save immediately gains the lycanthropic template for the noted duration and treats the Beast Lord as if they had the helpful attitude (see Diplomacy on page 72 of the Player's Handbook) for the duration of the infection. Once the template has been lost, the helpful attitude is also changed back to indifferent. The only way to retain the effects of the template, once lost, is to take the Favoured of the Beast Lord feat (see below).

Krynnish lycanthropes are only ever seen when the animal domain of a particular Beast Lord is threatened. They are never tied to the phases of the moons and the affected creatures do not have the true lycanthropic curse and this cannot pass along that infection to another creature with their natural attacks. The Beast Lords usually use the ability to make humanoid servants from their animal followers, or rarely, to make humanoids into powerful fighters for the Beast Lord's animal domains.

Favoured of the Beast Lord (General)
A Beast Lord has smiled on your efforts to protect their domain and has granted you a lingering effect.
Prerequisite: Must have been endowed by a Beast Lord with a short term form of lycanthropy*.
Benefit: You keep limited access to the lycanthrope template that you were endowed with by the Beast Lord. Once per day per Hit Die, you can shift your form from your original base form into either the hybrid form or the animal form (or the human form if originally an animal). This ability functions like the polymorph spell, except as noted here. The effects last for 1 hour or until you change back into your original form. Changing form (from animal to hybrid or human form) is a standard action. This is a supernatural effect.

*See Bast, the Beast Lord of Cats for more information on Lycanthropy and Krynn.
