Knight of the Sword Variant Progression

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Trampas Whiteman

The Knight of the Sword, as presented in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting comes with a few problems. Compared to the Knight of the Rose, it seems very underpowered, leaving little reason for one to remain a Knight of the Sword. Likewise, it loses a bit of flavor with the Knight of the Rose having a "+1 caster level" at each level.

The War of the Lance variant does much to get back to the feel of the Knight of the Sword, but it is era-specific and doesn't come with spellcasting.

This Knight of the Sword variant progression makes a couple of assumptions: that the character knows from the start that they want to be a Knight of the Sword, and that there should be one progression for taking this path.

Note that the hit die has been changed from a d8 to a d10. This reflects the fact that Knight of the Swords are the "holy warriors" of the Knights of Solamnia, not clerics in and of themselves.

The requirements have been changed to account for both the Crown and Knight of the Swords. Indeed, the very first level of this class will be spent as a Knight of the Crown. The knight won't attain Knight of the Sword status until 2nd level. Again, this is to make it easier by having one progression.

You will note that this variant includes its own spellcasting progression, rather than the standard "+1 spellcaster level". This is my attempt to get back to the feel of Dragonlance Adventures. If you would rather use the "+1 spellcaster level", feel free to. Likewise, you could adapt the assassin spell progression and give the Knight of the Sword its own spellcasting progression (and spells known) for mystic characters.

Knight of the Sword Requirements

Alignment: Lawful Good
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Base Save Bonus: Fort +4
Skills: Diplomacy 2 ranks, Knowledge (nobility and royalty) 2 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 4 ranks, Ride 4 ranks.
Feats: Endurance, Honor-bound
Special: The Knight of the Sword must have met the Squire of Crown special requirement of the Knight of the Crown prestige class as presented in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting.

Class Skills:

Class Features:

Hit Die: d10

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Per the Knight of the Sword in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting.

Spells per Day: A Knight of the Sword has the ability to cast a small number of divine spells. To cast a Knight of the Sword spell, a Knight of the Sword must have a Wisdom score of at least 10 + the spell's level, so a Knight of the Sword with a Wisdom of 10 or lower cannot cast these spells. Knight of the Sword bonus spells are based on Wisdom, and saving throws against these spells have a DC of 10 + spell level + the Knight of the Sword's Wisdom modifier. When the Knight of the Sword gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Wisdom score for that spell level. The Knight of the Sword chooses spells from the cleric spell list, preparing and casting them just as a cleric does (though a Knight of the Sword cannot spontaneously cast cure or inflict spells).

Strength of Honor (Su): Per the Knight of the Crown ability.

Knightly Courage (Su): Per the Knight of the Crown ability.
