Whisper spiders are intelligent and hateful carnivores that dwell in the wilderness. They deliberately lure large prey into their hidden traps with objects of carefully woven spider webs, trapping opponents into hidden sheets of webs so that they can make a killing strike.

The whisper spider has a plump abdomen covered with short, black bristles, with two grey stripes running the length of its back. Its multiple gleaming eyes are bright red. It can flatten itself against the ground to remain concealed, or move in utter silence. The whisper spider possesses terrifying fangs of huge size, which drip a clear liquid when the creature is excited.

Combat

A whisper spider uses lures and misdirection to capture prey. It hunts any warm-blooded creature it can ensnare, preferring monkeys, wild boars, herd animals, and humans.

Poison (Ex): Bite, Fortitude save (DC 20); Initial and secondary damage 1d8 temporary Strength.

Web (Ex): A whisper spider can cast a web eight times per day. This is similar to an attack with a net but has a range increment of 10 feet, and is effective against targets of Large size or smaller (see page 102 in the Player's Handbook for details on net attacks). The web anchors the target in place, allowing no movement.

An entangled opponent can escape with a successful Escape Artist check (DC 28) or burst it with a Strength check (DC 34).

Whisper spiders create ten-foot square sheets of sticky webbing that are positioned to trap unwary ground prey. Approaching creatures must make a Spot check (DC 20) to notice a web; otherwise they stumble into it and become trapped as though by a successful web attack. Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot section has 14 hit points and damage reduction 5/fire.

A whisper spider can also use webbing to create a false spider, flapping banner, a filmy barrier to provide cover, or a variety of other shapes, mostly as lures. It moves across its own sheet webbing at its climb speed.

Skills: Whisper spiders receive a +8 racial bonus to Craft (webbing), Hide, Jump, Move Silently, and Spot checks.
