Karnuthians

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

This is a PC Race found in the Dragonlance novel "Dark Heart" by Tina Daniel. I have created the race based mostly on what she described in the character of El-Navar.

Karnuthians are a race of shape-shifters that hail from the region of Southern Ergoth. They resemble humans in most ways, but they move with a particular grace that seems to remind one of a cat. The simple reason for this is that they are a lycanthropic race, not necessarily afflicted with the curse of lycanthropy, but given to shifting between the form of a human of their age, and a black panther.

They are a nocturnal people spending most of the daylight hours in slumber, and getting most of their tasks accomplished during the nighttime hours. Seen during the daylight hours they often seem lethargic and apathetic. After the sunsets, they are an energetic and enthusiastic people. They have an appreciation for the finer things in life, and are quite passionate about life in general.

Karnuthian males are fierce warriors, and talented soldiers, scouts and woodsmen. Many mercenary troupes have been known to use Karnuthians in the ranks. Females are strong and proud contributors to Karnuthian society. Though the society is a Patriarchal one, women are seen as equals, and often take charge of the society when the majority of the men are fighting off a threat to their peace.

Advancement: By Character Class

Alternate form: A Karnuthian can take the form of a black panther at will. In times of sudden stress, they will often revert out of instinct. To resist this requires a will save (DC 15). When in Panther form a Karnuthian retains his/her intelligence, but does not retain any spellcasting abilities. There is no Hybrid Form.

Nocturnal: A Karnuthian is at his/her best during the nighttime hours. When other characters are in dire need of sleep, the Karnuthian can keep a vigilant watch. The downside is that they are often sluggish during daylight hours. They require a little sleep in the saddle on long rides.

Pounce: If a Karnuthian in Panther form leaps upon a foe during combat, it can make a full attack even if it makes a move equivalent action.

Improved Grab: To use this ability, the Karnuthian must be in Panther Form and hit with a successful Claw or Bite attack. If he catches hold, he can Rake.

Rake: After a successful Grab or Pounce, a Karnuthian can make a rake attack with his/her back claws (+9 melee 1d8+3 damage).
